Beneath the castle stairs
Hidden beneath the monumental entrance staircase of Château Morreau lie two identical wine cellars: Les Caves Jumelles.
These masonry vaults were built alongside the castle in 1895 and extend beneath the forecourt and the grand entrance hall.
Original pencil inscriptions remain visible today among the hundreds of wine racks:
- Saint-Émilion 1934
- Médoc 1937
- Bages 1926
- Vin Blanc
Names, dates, and arrows tell the story of the wines that were stored here nearly a century ago.
A living time capsule
What makes these cellars special is not just the vaults or the brick architecture.
On several pillars, the original notes from the people who worked here between the two World Wars are still visible.
Their handwriting remains legible today, nearly a hundred years later.
Each marking forms a small piece of the castle's lost wine log.
From cellar to table
The wines served today in the bar and restaurant of Château Morreau find their origins in a centuries-old tradition of hospitality.
Les Caves Jumelles serve as a reminder that wine has always been more than just a drink here.
It was an integral part of life on the estate.
